The National Apprenticeship and Graduate Volunteer (NAGV) Programme
1. The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) is implementing the National Apprenticeship and Graduate Volunteer (NAGV) Programme which aims to provide structured employment-based learning and work readiness skills to unemployed and underemployed youth
2. The Programme has two core components, namely; Apprenticeship, and Graduate Volunteerism. The Apprenticeship Component, equips participants through a structured on-the-job and off-the-job learning with a whole set of competencies of a specific occupation, ending with formal assessment and certification. On the other hand, Graduate Volunteerism involves the engagement of individuals of working age in unpaid work aimed at acquiring employable skills, gaining work experience, building professional networks, and enhancing social standing.
3. Under the Apprenticeship Component, the Ministry in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MoTWA), Uganda Hotel Owners Association (UHOA), Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training College (UHTTC), Millennium Business School (MBS), and Be Better Academy (BBA), CSC Koblenz with respective financial support from the Government of Uganda, International Labour Organization (ILO), Enabel and CSC Koblenz, has supported the training of 520 Apprentices. Of these, 73.1% have transitioned into employment.
4. Under the Graduate Volunteerism component, 242 Graduate Volunteers have so far been recruited and placed across 47 host institutions for one-year placements, with approximately 75% securing formal employment during or immediately after their placement period.
